 Why does my ferret eat his bedding?!?!? My ferret eats his fleece sleep sacks. He shreds the majority of them and eats the fleece (I can actually see the red fleece in his stool) and then sleeps in whatever there is left over. I don't want to take the sleep sacks completely out of his cage because it's winter and he needs something warm to sleep in. Any suggestions? Is this typical? Mine burrows in his, but I have never heard of one eating their bedding. My first guess would also be that he is bored. Give him more out of cage time or take him for a walk outside on a harness. I would definitely put more stuff in his cage for him to entertain himself. I recommend tubes to tunnel through and ping pong balls or jingly ones (be sure he can't eat anything on/in them). Mine has stuffed animals that he wrestles with and a rubber chew toy (I have to check that he hasn't chewed any of it off), but I wouldn't recommend those until yours has stopped eating things. You don't want him to ingest anything because he could get intestinal blockage. I would give him a dig box and see if he'll play in that. People fill their dig boxes with dirt or sometimes rice...I would use dirt because I think there is a lesser chance of him eating it. Try anything that could entertain him; I put some empty coke boxes in my ferret's cage and stuffed them with t-shirts. He enjoys the burrowing and the cloth might be harder to chew (not sure if he would chew cardboard). I would take away his current sleep stuff since they are torn and give him something new, because since the material is loose it's easier for him to eat it. Maybe try something not made of fleece? Maybe he's attracted to that in particular. |

Do you Need to Get your Ferret a Hammock?
Ferrets enjoy a nice long sleep. And it is great that they do, after all, most of their day is spent doing it. And a ferret hammock is the ultimate place to slumber. Ferrets love to run about and be energetic and will burn a large amount of calories while they are awake. To rest from all of their action they call for long periods of napping. Supplying a quiet place to sleep where they can feel safe and comfy is vital for their health.
One of a ferret's supreme joys is hiding and playing in soft dark places. But napping in these comfortable places is also appreciated. A ferret's requirements are similar to our requirements when it comes to napping. When temperatures are high we like to push the blankets off, but when it is cold we enjoy crawling below some extra blankets. This helps us regulate our body temperature.
Ferrets have an identical need to normalize their internal heat. They take pleasure in snuggling in a warm bed when the temperatures are low and recline with no blankets when the weather is sweltering. For this reason it is imperative to provide them a choice so that they can regulate their bodily temperature and remain comfy. This is necessary for maintaining beneficial napping conditions.
There are two kinds of bedding that your ferret will be delighted with; hammocks and sleep sacks. Both sides of a hammock are attached to fixtures and it hangs off the floor. When the weather gets warm they have the option to ascend up into their hammock without a cover, giving them a chance to stay as cool as possible.
Hammocks come in all sizes and shapes and are made from an assortment of materials. Fleece hammocks are exceptionally comfortable and your pet will love sleeping in one. Make sure to get a big one if you own more than one ferret as they will get pleasure from snuggling together while they are napping.
Most hammocks come with a way to modify the size of the opening, which is a great feature. Hammocks are also space efficient due to the fact that they hang above the ground. This gives your pet additional room to run about in their confines.
A sleep sack is another alternative bedding option for a ferret, sometimes known as a nap sack. Imagine it it as a sleeping bag for ferrets. As they are located directly on the ground of the cage there will be less floor space for running about. However, even though it will shrink the area they can run around in, it should still be given to them. Many sleep sacks contain one opening while others have two, one at each end.
Both sleep sacks and hammocks will in time grow to be sullied, so it is crucial to buy machine washable kinds that are easy to keep sanitary. Allowing your pets to use grubby beds is a certain way to spread disease. It is also a good idea to get firmly woven beds as they are sturdier and will last longer. They are also not as likely to develop loose threads. If you ever see any loose threads or strings on a hammock or sleep sack, remove the bedding from their cage immediately as it can become dangerous to your ferret. Either patch it or get new bedding.
There are a couple of advantages to hammocks. They permit additional running room in the cage and help reduce pressure on a ferret's body when napping due to the fact that they are able to lie in a normal sleeping position. Sleep is essential for your pet's health and well being, so if you can offer soft comfortable beds they will be happier for it. And selecting both a hammock and a sleep sack is a superior way to keep them comfy, healthy, and happy.
